The Current Space
As the kitchen/dining space is right now I’m happy with the layout and the functionality. What’s not quite working for me is the color combination. I feel like something is off about how the white cabinets/walls, greenish-black counters/backsplash and maple work together. It feels like two competing color schemes to me. Probably because that’s where this look came from. My husband and I merged our two different aesthetics into one when I moved into his space and we still need some work to make it really fit together.
To see the space as it was when I moved in and before we painted, check out this post.
Inspiration
These are some examples of spaces with a similar dark counter and/or dark backsplash theme:

This is the type of space that I’m drawn to right now:
Existing Elements
Existing granite countertops. These used to bother me but they’ve been growing on me lately and they’re still in pretty good shape. Also, we have a lot of them. This granite is also on the backsplash as well as the fireplace surround.
Existing rug, given to me by my dad who collects rugs. I do like the colors in here but if it really can’t work with the granite, I can find another place for this rug and get a different one pretty easily. Might actually be nice to have one that’s longer and goes in front of the stove as well.

Breakdown of Possible Plans
1 | Paint Cabinets Darker Color
Thinking cabinets might coordinate better with granite in a darker color.

2 | Update Knobs
Another option that might tie it together is to update the knobs to black, brass or other.
3 | Remove the Backsplash
One idea I have is to remove just the backsplash portion of granite and retile it with something else such as they did over at Yellow Brick Home like in the photos below. Ours at least is not the 4″ backsplash like in this picture and instead is the full length so I do think it might be more workable.
