Riverwalk Loft: Status Update (Fall 2021)

This place started out as my husband’s bachelor pad and it’s gone through many iterations over the years. It feels close to done but still some more work to do. This is where things are now.

The Kitchen

Our goal is always to work with what we have. To avoid placing more than we have to in landfills and to avoid buying and producing what we already have or what we can reuse or get for free. Our kitchen has been sort of a tough project. I probably wouldn’t choose dark counters but we have them and they’re still in pretty good shape so I’d rather figure out a way to make them work than trash them and get something new. The cabinets are also in decent shape and although we did recently paint them, the paint we used is not holding up well and they need to be repainted. I’m kind of glad because I don’t love the finish or the color. I’m thinking I’ll darken them slightly, switch to a matte finish rather than satin and figure out a different way to paint them besides a roller brush. The roller brush combined with the satin finish creates a speckly, sparkly effect when the afternoon sun hits them that drives me crazy.>

The Bedroom

The bedroom is both the place we all sleep and my husband’s office during the day. We bedshare and in order to do so safely, we moved the bed to the floor and put the frame in storage.  Things are pretty functional in here but would like to do something more intentional than the bedsheet as curtain to the closet and planning on upgrading the sheets to white linen sheets with oatmeal pillows and an oatmeal throw. Feel like it’s still missing something though to tie it together.

The BAthroom

The bathroom was only partially primed and painted and never finished. The light was actually even installed upside down. Things we’d like to do here: regrout the tile floors and shower, paint the walls a grayish color (I think), perhaps paint the vanity, invest in new towels, recess the vanity, install a new coordinating light fixture, and remove the towel bar above the toilet and replace it with a towel ring on the wall to the right of the sink.

Inspiration…

Things I have and want to keep or love and want to bring in.

The Design

PainT Colors

The large paint chip on the left, White Dove, is what the space is currently painted in. The chips on the right are recommendations from a designer who we consulted with when we thought we were moving and she was choosing colors to help sell the place. For the previous color scheme, check out this post.

Other Possible Colors

Oil Cloth | Benjamin Moore
Pashmina | Benjamin Moore
Tate Olive | Benjamin Moore
Kendall Charcoal | Benjamin Moore
Midnight | Benjamin Moore

I agree that these paint colors work well with the existing granite and existing tile on the bathroom floor but I’m not sure they work that well with our furniture. We do want the place ready to sell, if we ever decide that we’re actually finally ready to do that but in the meantime, we’d like it to look nice with the furniture we have. We’ve been thinking we were going to move for over three years now (!) so I think it’s time we paint it and decorate it in a way that we like since I believe we might as well enjoy it while we’re here.

Inspiration in Other Spaces

Becki Owens

I like the combination of whites, off-whites, and other neutrals.

Studio McGee

Here I like the balance of colors, warmth and shade on the cabinets.
