Creating a Dining Area: Where We’re Starting From

After our son was born, we decided we needed an actual table for eating dinner. Prior to having our son, we ate all of our meals at barstools pulled up to the counter (they were padded, comfortable ones from Room & Board and we still have them in storage for if we ever decide to move but they no longer fit with this dining table).

Plan to Refinish the Table

We found this table on craigslist and it’s definitely seen a lot of life. The plan is eventually to redo the top with Rubio Monocoat, after we get some of the other projects we’re working on finished.

Plan to Redo the Decor on the Back Wall

Another plan is to redo the wall behind the dining table. The Chicago map was a gift and I do like it but the colors are too bold for me to have to look at regularly in such a prominent area of our house. It will be moving to the wall by our front door.

My plan is to put a mirror on this wall because I like the idea of reflecting light and the view from the windows on the other side of this room. I also have a pretty large collection of wine books from my time as a wine buyer and a limited area for book storage so I’d like to add a shelf up high on this wall, above the mirror to house the wine books.

Next step is for me to mock up a plan in photoshop for what I want it to look like.
